Anxiety can descend upon us like a sudden downpour, drowning our thoughts and sometimes dropping us to our knees. Do you ever experience debilitating anxiety that can send you into a tailspin?
You’re not alone! Many people are feeling extra levels of anxiety during these stressful times; and anxiety disorder is a serious matter that can stop us in our tracks.
I help people manage anxiety and I help them feel more empowered with a purpose-driven meditation practice. In this video you are going to learn 7 steps to first acknowledge anxiety, and then practice releasing it and replacing it with calm acceptance. Shift away from feeling powerless, to feeling empowered as you learn skills that will help you experience anxiety in a different way.
We all have many roles to play in life, and often anxiety overcomes us when we least expect it. Or…we find that anxiety repeatedly descends upon us when we are in certain circumstances like crowds, stressful pressure, emotional turmoil, etc. These events may be a trigger for your anxiety.
Give me the word befriend below, and I will send you the shownotes for today so you can continue to work on managing and befriending anxiety. Tumultuous events will not go away, friends, but we can learn skills to better manage these events.
If we’ve not met, I’m Jen Dial and I help busy people plug into their inner peace, align with their purpose and achieve their goals with meditation on a daily basis.
We do this using my signature Golden Particles Meditation Technique, via private and group coaching and our Meditation Library full of recorded meditations that help you navigate the valleys and peaks in life.
Most of us are busy bees, and sometimes we aren’t even in touch with the fact that we are starting to stress out. So in Step 1 of Befriending Anxiety, I want you to be aware of the initial sensations of anxiety so that we can start there. What are some triggers? How does it feel? Where do you feel it in your body? In order to take Step 1, we need to turn inward and OBSERVE ourselves when we have anxious feelings and sensations. Are you in touch with feelings and stress in your body? Or are you on auto pilot, pushing down your feelings?
Let’s change that story. You used to push down your feelings but now you acknowledge them.
Shortly, I will cover 7 Steps to Befriending Anxiety. You see, anxiety is usually a messenger or signal that something is being triggered inside of us, turning on the fight or flight switch. Perhaps this pattern was adapted years ago, or in our childhood.
After we cover the 7 Steps to Befriending Anxiety, I’d like to invite you to my upcoming masterclass. Write masterclass in the chat and we will make sure you are registered. I’m excited to teach tips and techniques in my 5 Keys to Effective Meditation in 10 Minutes/Day.
Let’s dive into my 7 Steps to Befriending Anxiety. We already touched on Step 1:
Step 1: Observe how anxiety is affecting you in your body.
Step 2: Identify the trigger that brought on the anxiety.
Step 3: Pause and breathe deeply to relax your nervous system and quell the fight or flight mechanism. Imagine breathing in calm, cool blue energy that will relax the anxious sensations.
Step 4: Focus on the part of your body where the anxiety is being held (head, throat, chest, stomach, etc.). Continue breathing deeply, and allow the calming blue energy to flood that area of your body and imagine that it is replacing the anxiety, which is being exhaled with each breath out to release it.
Step 5: Now that the anxiety is outside of you, be receptive to the message it is bringing to you. Sit in receptivity, patiently waiting for a thought or phrase that will occur to you.
Step 6: Repeat audibly or silently:
“Everything is going to be okay. I am experiencing anxiety, which is a messenger that I seek to understand.”
Step 7: After your experience, write in a journal your awarenesses as the observer.
The more you practice this technique, the better skilled you will become in befriending anxiety. It takes practice and reprogramming. These subtle shifts in how we look at anxiety will begin to neutralize anxiety so that it is not something that can victimize us. One of the keys is to remain the observer.
Be sure to write befriend below and I’ll send you the list of 7 Steps to Befriend Anxiety. Then, practice, practice, practice and please share your results with me. This technique has helped many of my clients (and people in my life who suffer from anxiety disorder). As Alex said last year in a letter to me:
Dear Jen,
I have to share that the training and meditation work I did with you 2 years ago has changed so many things about my life. First of all, my anxiety disorder has become so minimal that I have been able to reduce my medication. The fact that I don’t need to hesitate to commit to going places because I might have anxiety is life changing! I can’t thank you enough!
May you be blessed as you have blessed me,
Alex
